Pittsboro, NC
Venue: Shakory Hills Grassroots Fest w/ David Via & Corn Tornado
State: NC

Corn Tornado’s sound reflects the full breadth of Appalachian heritage while pushing its boundaries forward. David Via’s songwriting has earned rare honors and widespread respect, including songs recorded by major bluegrass and Americana artists. One of his most meaningful moments came when his song “Lord Keep the Light On” was requested for Jeanette Carter’s funeral, performed by Marty Stuart.

Beyond songwriting, Via is a dynamic performer whose commanding voice and unique mandolin style have made him a sought-after collaborator. Over the years, he has performed with Tony Rice, Tim O’Brien, Sammy Shelor, Curtis Burch, Ronnie Bowman, Larry Keel, and many others.

Corn Tornado is more than a backing band—it is a living, breathing collaboration:

  • David Via — Songwriter, vocals, mandolin, guitar
  • Daniel Knicely — Guitar, vocals
  • “Fiddly” Dave VanDeventer — Fiddle, vocals
  • John Flower — Doghouse bass, vocals

Together, they blend tight harmony vocals with high-energy, improvisational picking, creating performances that feel both deeply rooted and completely alive in the moment.

Blending “blues-grass” and “y’all-ternative” influences, Corn Tornado delivers powerful live shows marked by musical virtuosity, heartfelt songwriting, and the camaraderie of lifelong friends. Every performance becomes an open circle—inviting audiences into the shared story of the music.

At its core, Corn Tornado is about connection—between musicians, between tradition and innovation, and between stage and audience. Each show is a reminder that this music lives not in perfection, but in shared moments, trust, and the spark of improvisation.
